A Laidley tradition

How Laidley switches on Christmas

On the last Friday in November, Patrick Street closes to traffic and fills up. There are carnival rides, market stalls, food and live music, carols, a visit from Santa, the traditional Ham Wheel, and plenty to keep the kids busy. The shops stay open late for a bit of twilight trading.

It started with the Ham Wheel out the front of the Post Office. A few spins, a happy crowd, the street closed for the evening. Over the years the Chamber grew it into the twilight street carnival Laidley knows today.

The idea behind it hasn't changed: bring people into the heart of Laidley, back the businesses that make our main street, and give local families a night to look forward to every Christmas.

One unforgettable evening

What's on

  • Carnival rides

    $5 a ride

Rides set up right on the street, and they're $5 a go. Pick up a wristband on the night and off they go.

  • A visit from Santa

    Free

He turns up every year. The kids get a free treat, and you get the photo.

  • The Ham Wheel

    Buy a spin

Older than the carnival itself. Buy a spin, hold your breath, and maybe take home the Christmas ham. Laidley has been doing this for generations.

  • Live music & carols

    Free

Local acts on the stage, carols later on. Bring a rug.

  • Market stalls & food

    Free to browse

Stalls and food vans the length of Patrick Street. Dinner is sorted, and so is the last of the Christmas shopping.

  • Twilight shopping

    Free

The shops keep their doors open after dark. Worth a wander between the rides and the ham wheel.

Patrick Street is closed to traffic for the night. We'll put parking and detour details here once they're set.
        Weather
Late November in the Lockyer, so it'll be warm when you arrive. A hat for the first hour and water for the kids. If the weather turns, our Facebook page is where we'll say so.
        Kids
It gets busy once the lights come on. Pick a meeting spot with the kids when you get there, and write your mobile number on their arm. It sounds daggy. It works.
        Bring
The whole family, a rug for the music, and the Christmas list. The shops are open late for a reason.

        Be part of the magic

        Get involved

Local businesses and volunteers put this on. Nobody gets paid, and there's always room for one more.

        • Sponsor the Carnival

Sponsors are why the rides are $5 and not $12. Anything from a $100 Ham Wheel spin up to Presenting Partner.

        • Hold a stall

Market stalls, food vans and community groups, all along Patrick Street. Sites are limited and our stall coordinator sorts who goes where.

        • Volunteer

Setting up, packing down, handing out wristbands, running the Ham Wheel, minding the kids' corner. A couple of hours is plenty.
